Wednesday Word: Brumation

Brumation - noun.

Even high brow words can be found in low brow places, which is how I learned about brumation. In Season 2 of Cobra Kai, a character explains that snakes don't just hibernate. They undergo brumation. Endothermic and heterotherms may hibernate, but ectotherms, which rely on external heat sources, don't "hibernate" in the same way. Snakes, lizards and turtles are just a few examples of animals that undergo a different metabolic process where they are sluggish and inactive during winter or other low temperature times. Brumation is similar to hibernation in that the state is triggered by cooler temperatures and decreased sunlight.
