1. To cause a plant to develop without chlorophyll by preventing exposure to sunlight.
2. To cause to become pale and weak, as from malnutrition; to drain of color or vigor.

Etymology:  French etiolier, to make pale.

Belgian endive (witloof chicory) is etiolated.
