Tuesday Word: fug

A fug is a stuffy atmosphere, particularly one that results from over-crowding and/or inadequate ventilation. Fugs are often encountered at concerts and bars, where body heat, smoke and crowding combine to fill attendees with UTTER TERROR, the fear of imminent suffocation and a strong desire to claw their way to the nearest exit. A fug may be intentionally created, however -- for instance, as a defense from the cold.

Fug may also refer to a euphemism for a less polite term adopted by authors who wished to avoid offending their readership (or their publishers), or, when capitalized, a member of the rock band The Fugs.
