Thursday word: infundibuliform

infundibuliform (in-fuhn-DIB-yuh-luh-fawrm) - adj., funnel-shaped.

Yup. Shaped like an infundibulum, which is Latin for a funnel (from infundere, to pour in or out -- the many senses of in- must wait for another post). Used these days largely in botany and anatomy, but also in humorous contexts -- those sorts of writings where the occasional $20 word adds to the mock-intellectual effect.

... that patriotic Texan with his infundibuliform jowls and his lumpy, rumpleheaded, indestructible smile cracked forever across the front of his face like the brim of a black ten-gallon hat.

—Joseph Heller, Catch-22
