English usage dates from the mid 1600s. The word comes from the Greek rhabdos, rod, twig, or stick + manteia, divination or oracle.
'Dowse' dates from the 1690s, with uncertain word origin.

Belomancy (or bolomancy) is divination using arrows.
Axinomancy is divination using axes or hatchets.
